The Lure of The Dinghy

Racing with a crew takes teamwork. Each crew member has their strengths and weaknesses that need to be built upon and worked around respectively.

On a dinghy it is you and you alone who decides the outcome of the race. There is something very humbling about dinghy racing. It is also where a sailor can learn the most about sailing. Weight is so crucial on the dinghy. Slight shifts can make a huge difference. It is also one of the best rides in sailing....small boat and very fast.

I was surfing about and came across the site the horse's mouth (mostly wet version) which carries some fantastic video of dinghy racing. In particular was this little clip of 49er's on Lago di Garda.

The flying moth caught my attention while checking these sites out. Extremely cool design and very fast. It looks like a modified 49'er with hydrofoil attachments. Check the video out on Rohan Veal Racing. Very cool, very wet, fun and fast!! What else could you want in a boat.

Checked out the Flying moth, boy does that look wicked. Looks like tons of fun, but also loads of work.

Do you know how much a small boat like that would cost? Obviously not gonna go out and buy one for the cottage, just curious...

Went on to the International Moth Class site and checked it out as I was curious myself. Seems the price range is pretty wide. I did find this one for $2000 AUS which works out to be about $1,766.97 Canadian. Of course delivery would be extra.

Prices went as high as $11,000 AUS form this particular site. I'm not sure if there is a Canadian Moth Class...will have to check it out.

Being sailor ignorent... what kinda winds would you need to use a craft like this? would it require higher winds that a regular sailboat would?

Generally most dinghy need only a light wind to sail. Much less resistance and force needed to get the boat going. The uniqueness of this boat is that it planes on hydrofoils, in order to get the boat flying and up on the rails I assume it needs more than a light breeze. Have not personally sailed the moth. if anyone out there has please let us know what is the optimal performance wind speed is.

I will take a look into it and see if I can find some answers from some of the sites. In one video from Rohan Veal (looks like a television or sports interview) the interviewer says "there is not a lot of wind today" but he still manages to get up on the rails. So My educated guess is probably 10 knots would be the minimum wind to plane. Agian...just my guess.

I have sailed a sunfish when 12 knots started overpowering the boat. On the J24 12 knots is a nice leisurely sail 15-20 knots is a good race day and 25-30 is a great experience.

thanks for the question.

hey...legit post here.

to buy a moth off the shelf that you can win a worlds in is about 18000 to 20000AUD. second hand ones are now about 5000 to 15000aud

they need about 8-10 knots of breeze to get foiling, about 6 knots of boat speed is all that is required.
